Umpire at work

THE BLUE CREW

The Kitchener Jamboree attracts top softball teams from across Ontario, Quebec and the U.S.A. It also attracts top officials and has earned a reputation for the pursuit of excellence in officiating. 2006 will be the third successive year in which the Jamboree has partnered with Softball Ontario to ensure that our officiating is second to none for midget and bantam girl’s softball. Softball Ontario is assigning 31 umpires to Canadian Championships in 2006, and all will be requested to participate in the Jamboree as a Canadian Championship Umpire Preparatory Clinic. All of the midget division games will feature a three or four umpire system, as will several of the bantam division games.

The umpire crew will be under the overall direction of Tournament Umpire-in-Chief, Ed Otterman. Ed is a Level 5 umpire with extensive experience officiating in Canadian Fastpitch Championships and top-level international fastpitch tournaments. Ed serves on the Softball Ontario Fastpitch Umpire Committee and will have a crew of deputy UICs that includes fellow Fastpitch Umpire Committee members: Grep Pipher (Level 5 umpire); Jim Herbert (Level 5 umpire) and Doug Webster (Level 4 umpire). In total, approximately twelve such senior umpires will be available to provide instructional support and conduct formal evaluations and debriefing sessions with the on-field umpires after every game. A senior off-field umpire will be assigned and available at each game.

Umpires for the tournament are a mixture of young and more experienced officials. All invited officials are certified by Softball Canada and come to the tournament for the experience of umpiring top level elite fastpitch softball and the intensive and helpful evaluations and instructional sessions. At the 2006 Jamboree, for the first time outside of a Canadian Championship tournament, qualifying umpires will be able to receive evaluations leading to a recommendation for their Level 4 Softball Canada umpire certification.

Officials interested to umpire at the 2006 Jamboree tournament are invited to complete and submit the application form posted on this website.
